Phanfare Friends and Family Feature

From Doc

Table of contents

Most Phanfare customers prefer not to make their viewers register for an account and login to view. Instead, they opt for easy sharing and set up open sites or sites protected by a single site password.

However, customers can set up a site with Phanfare using registration-based security. The URL for the site will be different, and it will require specifically publishing new albums to that URL for friends and family to view.

URLs for sites using registration-based security

The URLs for all sites using this security model are formatted as albums.phanfare.com/yourusername. There is no way to use this security model with your username.phanfare.com URL.

Inviting friends and family to connect

When using registration-based security, you need to invite your friends and family to connect with you on Phanfare. They then receive an invite requesting they sign up for a free Phanfare account and view your albums. If they click through the invite and register, they can then go directly to your site URL at anytime and login to view. They will also automatically receive email notifications (unless you turn them off) of new albums when you post them.

To invite friends and family to connect:

  1. Sign into Phanfare (http://www.phanfare.com/login.aspx)
  2. click share -->Friends and family -->friends and family off the header
  3. Click the link to add friends & family
  4. Enter the first name, last name and email address and customize a message if you want.
  5. Hit invite.

Publishing albums to connected friends and family

Once you create an album, you will see a button that says publish. Please be aware that this button has no relevance to your albums.phanfare.com/username site. If you publish an album using that button, it is publishing to your username.phanfare.com site. Unless your friends and family are also aware of that URL and have the password (if required), they won't be able to see the album. They also won't get an automatic notification that an album has been added.

If you want to share a new album with friends and family, you must go into album options once it has been created and click the friends and family button (if web browser client) or scroll down to friends and family section (if desktop client) and check the appropriate boxes to publish the album to these connections. Once done, it appears on albums.phanfare.com/yourusername and automatic content notifications will go out that night.

Viewing and editing how albums are shared with connections

If you want to see a list of all your albums and/or edit how they are shared with friends and family:

  1. Sign into Phanfare (http://www.phanfare.com/login.aspx)
  2. Click share-->friends and family-->friends and family on the header
  3. Click link on right that says "Review how albums are shared with friends, family, or groups."

Also on the right side of that page is a link to your albums.phanfare.com/username site so you can see how your site appears at that URL.

Understanding automatic content notifications

When you share a new album with friends and/or family, a content notification email is sent overnight to your friend and/or family connections inviting them to view the album. These emails are sent automatically so that the person sharing the album does not need to send out email every time they create a new photo and video album.

These emails are also sent if an album created within the last 7 days that was not being shared with friends and family is changed to be shared.(Content notifications will not include any albums that have not been shared.) Content notification will combine all of the new albums visible to the recipient. So, even if you create three new albums, only one email will be sent.

In addition, these emails combine all of the new albums visible to members. So, if you and your brother both create new albums and share them with your mother (connected as family to both of you), she will get one content notification email that includes both albums.

Content notifications are only sent out for new albums. Adding images or sections to an existing album will not generate an automatic notification. You can turn off the notifications completely if you prefer in your settings.

Manually inviting connections to view your albums

Currently, there is no way to send an invite to a connection to view your albums on albums.phanfare.com/username. If you click share album-->email link to album in album edit mode, all invitations will direct recipients to the album, if published, on username.phanfare.com. If not pubished there, the invite will include an external link to just that single album. So your connections can still see the album but they will be considered an unnamed visitor and not have access to other friend/family albums.

We encourage those using registration-based security to either leave the automatic content notifications on and just let their connections come through those (they do autolog them in and give them access to all friend/family content) or use your own email to send out a note to your friends and family asking them to visit http://albums.phanfare.com/yourusername and login to view the album.
